50... Fabulous... and Fully Surprised

Laynie’s Games doesn't just HOST parties. I build experiences people remember.
So when it came time to celebrate my mom’s 50th, I treated it like my most important event yet! Weeks of planning, layered details and one very risky twist… a full surprise for someone who hates surprises... brought to you by Laynie's Games of course.
The risk
I started planning weeks out, locking in a private room at The Hammond in Camas and quietly texting all of her people. Every single person was so down to celebrate her. No hesitation, no convincing needed. Just “I’ll be there.”
Volleyball moms. Old friends. My friends’ moms. My sister’s friends’ moms. Women from different seasons of her life who all somehow have the same opinion:
January is the coolest.
Meanwhile, she had absolutely no clue... to the point where I was literally calling people to cancel her other plans so she wouldn’t accidentally ruin her own surprise.
My sister was tasked with getting her to "dinner" and… it was not going well.
Eventually she had to pull the emergency card:
“Laynie drove from Tri-Cities to surprise you. You need to get ready.”
Even then, my mom still had no idea what she was walking into.
The woman of the hour
If you’re going to build an experience around someone, you have to understand what makes them… them.
My mom is a busy lady. A volleyball coach, a former booster club president, a loud (and proud) heckling sports mom and a woman who somehow always ends up in charge… even when she didn’t ask to be.
She knows everyone. And more importantly, everyone loves her.
That’s what shaped this entire night.
The vibe
The theme: 50 and Fabulous.
Pinks. Black. Sparkles. And every DIY detail you could imagine.
Custom Cricut banners, floral centerpieces, a digital collage of photos from her college days playing on the TV. I personalized foil balloons, cut custom centerpieces and painted an acrylic welcome sign to set the tone the second you walked in.
Moms and daughters only

This was a girls-only situation.
A room full of moms and daughters, across generations of volleyball teams, school years and friendships.
Some of these women hadn’t seen each other in years, and within minutes it was like nothing had changed.
I curated a room of people who my mom LOVED.
Different personalities, same energy. The kind of women who can pick up a conversation instantly, laugh easily and make each other feel included. No weirdos allowed.
Game night, but make it mom

Games are where everything shifts from a party… to an experience.
I created a custom “January Jeopardy.” (Not actually Jeopardy, but the name stayed.) Questions pulled from her life. College boyfriends, fun facts and stories I had to investigate (ask grandma).
Everyone had their own little whiteboard and wrote A, B or C, then my mom revealed the answer.
The competitiveness was immediate and the stories were even better.
Top two winners got Laynie’s Games hats (obviously).
Then I passed out Sip or Spill cards and let the tables take over. Mom got WILD.
People made their own rules, shared stories, laughed harder. Exactly what I aim for at every event.
Why it mattered

My mom has spent her whole life creating moments for other people.
Team dinners. Carpools. Games. Events. Always showing up. Always making things special.
This was one night where she didn’t have to do any of it.
She just got to walk in and be celebrated.
And even though she’s “not a surprise person”…
she still talks about it all the time... which tells me everything I need to know.
